My Scamps

These are my scamp's. I've tried to map out what each cover could look like and what It could possibly be planned out more and made into my final piece. I've created six front cover, back cover and spine scamp's.

This design is to show the forest scenery and to show the dangerous wolf looming over little red riding hood whilst she is walking through the forest.

This design is more poetic and shows a bust shot of the wolf whilst little red riding hoods cloak wrapped around the creatures muzzle and hanging through its teeth like it's been gnawed on. Under is the empty basket and for the background would probably be a forest and dark blue night theme.

This is a joining back cover and front cover, so that you can see a linking connect through little red riding hood and the wolf, like the wolf actually came from her instead of something that attacked her. The cloak and the wolves fur would be linking in with each other moving from the back cover to the front cover.

This one shows the wolf being tangled and howling on the front cover, but it would be tangled in little red riding hoods red cloak, on the back cover would be larger pieces of her ripped cloak.

This one would be a more simple design but containing more scenery, the grandma's house, and forests scene but above the cottage would be the wolves eyes looming in the shadowy night.
The back cover would also be a forest scene with the moon.

This design would be cliffs in the evening time, and it would have a wolf standing on a cliff on the front cover with little red riding hood standing also on a higher cliff with an axe, but on the back cover it would just be the wolf standing on another cliff.

Drawings Of Subject Matter

To get a better idea of what I may base the little red riding hood book cover on I decided to do some drawings of subject matter. Doing this gave me a wider range of thing I could possibly add onto my front cover.

Little Red Riding Hood Annotated Story

The book I annotated was the Brothers Grimm version which was created in the 19th century. Two separate German versions were retold to Jacob Grimm and his brother Wilhelm Grimm. The brothers turned the first version in to the main body of the story and the second into a sequel of it.

Scamp Copies

These are my scamp copies of famous books. I copies these to get a sense of how illustration was used within the creation of book covers and so that when I came to design my own book cover scamp's I'd be to reference back at the copies I'd made. In total there are twelve covers which I made into scamp's. The original is on the left hand side, and the copy is on the right hand side.

Brainstorming

This is my brainstorm ideas for the given theme relationships. I'd decided to create a mind map because it was more creative and interesting than just making a list and from this I could pin point which branch of relationships I'd like to follow and link to my creation for my final piece.

Unit Brief

The publishing house and rights owner of Little Red Riding Hood has contacted me and requested I make a new book cover for the novel Charles Perrault created. They has requested that this be of a darker more intense theme than previous versions which have been created and that I use a limited colour pallet for a more scary looking effect.

They have requested that I take the following things into account when creating the book cover, this will aid me with the planning and creation of the actual product. They wish for me to take into consideration the materials in which I will use, and also the audience the product will be aimed at.

Materials - For materials they wish me to try and stick with traditional materials although some digital input will be appreciated. For traditional materials to be used hand drawn designs have been requested, this will help in the original feel of the book and also make it look more original. As for the digital aspect of the cover they've requested that the colouring process be done digitally to give a more unique, modern feel. Therefore these two aspects can be contrasting with the traditional and modern techniques.

Audience - As for audience It was requested that the audience for my product be more appropriate for the elder generation of children / teenagers. Specifically making the front cover look more dark schemed to match the original tale of Little Red Riding Hood, instead of the more young child friendly that is produced.
